Review: Goof #4

Another alien invasion means another day at the office for Captain Gorgeous. For us it’s reading about this “ordinary” guy who reminds us that his job is to save people, but getting out of bed can be anyone’s Kryptonite. Captain Gorgeous has one of those demanding jobs that need a personality of a go-getter to match. A person who understands that sacrifices need to be made on a personal level to better serve the greater good…not for Nick (Captain Gorgeous) though, he still wants to shower before he attends to an alien invasion. For me this demonstrates that he lacks the will to change or adjust his life, but his heart is in the right place. Today, this heart is put to the test.
This issue is called Suicide Watch, surely such a heavy subject matter belongs in a different book altogether.
So why is it here?
Jess is a 17 year old who is attempting to plunge to her death from a high rise building. I say attempting because Cap flies by and accidentally rescues her. Now Cap is trying to talk her down from the rooftop by sharing who he really is outside of the “Goof” suit. There’s such a visceral contrast between the 2 characters, Jess just needs to jump once to end her life, Cap has family members that take advantage of the fact that they can’t kill him. She’s on the roof top alone, he wakes up with the whole world on his shoulders. Think about that for a sec.
As I write this I can’t even remember what it was like to be 17, I’m sure it’s different now as times have changed obviously but I know I woke up one day and that feeling of self-hate was not there anymore. I think it comes down to how you see yourself as a person. What Cap was trying to get through to Jess was that, if she goes through with it it’s wasted potential on her side and the lives of loved ones will be losing out on a great person.
The heart I mentioned earlier comes to the rescue, she decides not to jump, he gains a friend and all is well again. I think we are introduced to Jess because Cap will need her when dark days come in the form of the Juns. Cap needs friends in his corner, and those he has helped in the past will surely come through for him in the future.
